A medical light therapy lamp is a source of light at a minimum intensity of 2 500 lux. Any other strong white-light-producing lamps like for example halogen lamps, are not to be used for light therapy. Only medically certified light therapy lamps have the necessary criteria for correct light therapy treatment. The uniform source of light must be continuous (does not flicker).
The surface of the light therapy lamp is covered by an opaque protective screen which filters ultra violet rays. The span of light is such that the treatment remains very pleasant. The intensity of the light is adjusted so as to have as little dazzling as possible from the light therapy lamp.

How to use a light therapy lamp ?
Light therapy consists of being exposed to a light therapy lamp from between half an hour upto 2 hours – preferably every day. The treatment is most advantageous when done in the morning - evening treatment may disturb sleep. The distance recommended between the light therapy lamp and the treated person’s face is between 60 and 110cm, depending on the type and brand of the lamp. This distance determines the duration of exposure, the treatment being at its best the closer you are to the light therapy lamp. It is not necessary to stare directly into the lamp, but just to keep it within your range. The light therapy lamp does not disturb your activities - you may read, have breakfast, watch TV, even work on your computer…

Light therapy lamps may be used by all. The only contraindication is for those who suffer from illnesses related to light exposure. Unlike certain preconceived ideas, the quantity of ultra violet light (UV) emitted by light therapy lamps is very low thanks to their special screen – well below the level given out by natural sunlight.
